Leadership, good leadership requires passion.
Yes, you should be passionate about what you do, but you should be even more caring and passionate about people. You must care about the success of those who you lead and those who lead you. When you are at a point where that fuels your desire more than your personal success, then you will begin to be a successful leader.

Too often we think of love or passion as only romantic, but love is so much more. Love is the cornerstone of the foundation of our lives. True love is putting someone else before our selves. It is when we start seeking or demanding to ‘be’ loved (or respected) that relationships, both personal and professional, begin to disintegrate and fall apart.

It is a fact that love drives us, motivates us, and when we show it to others it makes us the absolute best that we can be in every area of our lives. Regardless of this, and while love is always best, love isn’t always easy. It very often takes work. A lot of work. That’s why I like the quotation above. Love isn’t just a feeling, it’s a decision. You have to learn about it, weigh the costs, make the decision, and nurture it. To top it off, it isn’t a decision that’s just for the moment because love is a commitment to completion. A commitment to stay the course whatever the odds, costs, circumstances, or feelings.

Leadership is that way too. If you want to be a truly good leader you have to do it by choice, even if you were thrown into the position. You have to be prepared to stick with it even when it seems that you can’t do it, when the whole world seems to be against you. If not you will at the least be miserable, and at the worst you will give up.
